First draft, final draft and improvements made

This Is my final draft of my music magazine front cover.

Improvements
The drop shadow on “GIRL POWER” did not match the other drop shadowing on the other text. So I changed it so the pink was drop shadowing the white text on the bottom left.

I altered the bar code and inserted a date, price and website. This will give extra information to the readers.

I made the Polaroid effect bolder. I did this by downloading a Polaroid brush and then using the brush tool to go over it to make it bolder. This gives the magazine a grungy effect and meets the needs of my target audience.

I also had to make the image to A4 size. I did this by saving the image as a JPEG file, holding down the shift button and stretching it onto an A4 sized page.

For my magazine masthead I have used a grungy font to appeal to my target audience. My target audience are teenagers so I am using colours that stand out (pink, black and white) to attract them to buy the magazine. The name of the magazine is in black and I used the magic wand tool to fill in the white areas of the font pink. This makes the headline stand out and meets the criteria of my target audience. This font is called "green piloww" and I downloaded it from www.dafont.com. By downloading this font I feel it demonstrates how unique my magazine is. I spent a lot of time trying to find a perfect font for my masthead as it is one of the main conventions a magazine front cover has. I have created a button in the shape of a pink heart where i've placed my selling line “sex drugs and rock n’ roll” I have placed it in bold capital letters to emphasize it. I feel that it will attract a lot of people because of the colloquial language used. People will want to buy the magazine as the topic of sex, drugs and rock n' roll is a very interesting topic. The colour and shape will also attract people. I have used a white font to contrast with the magazine name. I have added the poster special because I think works really well as it is posters of the featured band so it will appeal to the fans of the band. I have used a sans serif font to show the informality of the magazine. The drop shadow sticks to my colour scheme and stands out more which will grab the readers attention. I have downloaded a brush that allows me to draw Polaroid picture frames. This gives a grungy effect to the magazine . This also fits with the kicker/explanation/list of bands at the bottom of the page. The way the list of bands is laid out at the bottom of the page is how some of the magazines I have looked at have set it out. I have used this image for my front cover because I feel it has a lot of emotion and attitude and since my magazine is a teen grunge music magazine it would work quite well. My target audience are teenagers, so having attitude ridden teens on the front cover will attract them to buy the magazine. I have used a midshot image on my front cover, so that the readers are able to see the emotion in the models faces. If i were to use a long shot, their emotion wouldn't be visible making the main image quite weak. I wanted to have a strong main image because it is one of the main conventions that attract the readers to buy the magazine. There is a  kicker at the top of the page which the reader sees this first and depending on what the kicker says, it could help attract more people to purchase the magazine. I have put the date line in a smaller font because it’s not a highly important piece of information on the magazine. I’ve put it in a normal sans serif font so it is easier to read. This is the main headline I will use on my magazine. It follows the rule of the left third and eye flow. I have put the word Right into a bigger font to attract the reader and hook and ruin in a smaller font. I feel this layout will look good. The way Right Hook Ruin is displayed could look like a boxing glove with the shape behind it. I have put the exclusive in a different colour so I can differentiate between the main headline and the subheadings/explanations. The shapes used give a grungy effect which is what my magazine is based on. This also meets the criteria of my target audience. I have used the kicker “it’s all about girl power” this explanatory text will indicate to readers that the featured band is an all girl band. I have used this kicker title because the majority of bands out there are male dominated so, a girl band may attract some new readers and teenage girls to start their own girl band. I have used a sans serif font to show informality and stick to the codes and conventions of a grungy music magazine. This also appeals to my target audience as they too are informal. I have added a barcode because it makes it look like a real magazine and it also tells the reader when it was issued, how much it is, and the website of the magazine. When taking my images for my magazine, I made sure that the background was "white" so that if I wanted to digitally add a pattern it would be easy. I decided to stick with the "white" background because it has a grungy feel as the background isn't completely white. It also sticks to my colour scheme of pink black and white.

Combining my music magazine ideas

This is the font I will use on my final magazine. I have used this font on all of my first draft magazines but I have filled this specific font in using my colour scheme of pink and black. I quite like the kicker at the top of the page as well, however I might edit it so that it has a grungy shape behind it so it gives the magazine more of a grungy feel.

The poster special I think works really well as it is posters of the featured band. I have used a sans serif font to show the informality of the magazine. The drop shadow sticks to my colour scheme and stands out more. I have downloaded a brush that allows me to draw Polaroid picture frames. This gives a grungy effect to the magazine .This also fits with the kicker/explanation/list of bands at the bottom of the page. The way the list of bands is laid out at the bottom of the page is how some of the magazines I have looked at set it out.

I will use this image for my front cover image because I feel it has a lot of emotion and attitude and since my magazine is a teen grunge music magazine it would work quite well. My target audience are teenagers so having attitude ridden teens on the front cover will attract them to buy the magazine.

This is the main headline I will use on my magazine. It follows the rule of the left third and eye flow. I have put the word Right into a bigger font to attract the reader and hook and ruin in a smaller font. The way Right Hook Ruin is displayed it could look like a boxing glove with the shape behind it. I have put the exclusive in a different colour so I can differentiate between the main headline and the subheadings/explanations. The shapes used give a grungy effect which is what my magazine is based on.

I like the pink heart shape I have created with the kicker “sex drugs and rock n’ roll” I feel that it will attract lots of people to buy the magazine as the topic of sex, drugs and rock n roll is a very interesting topic. The colour and shape will also attract people.

School Magazine contents page

This is my developed contents page. As you can see I have stuck to my colour scheme of pink, black and white to avoid confusion. I have used the same model as my main image to keep the magazine simple. I have used the same colours and fonts for "contents" This is a sans serif font which shows the informality of the magazine, which my target audience will like. The two images with to the right of the magazine are my cover lines on the front page of my magazine. I thought I should use these to fill the space on the page and because the cover lines are the main stories in a magazine I thought I should use images to show this and place a black border around them to emphasize this. I have added a small white caption box to show the reader what the images are of and i have added a small page number in a different colour to show the reader what page to turn to. I have added a white shape with "sixx this month!" written on top of it. This tells the reader what will be in the magazine this month. I have added the school logo to add
to remind the reader that this is a school magazine. I have used the same font and colour for the word "sixx" I have wrote the remaining contents in pink and black boxes. I have used these colours because I am sticking to my colour scheme and to avoid confusion.

This is my school magazine mock up contents page. I have decided to stick to the codes and conventions and I am sticking to the left third rule. This contents page also sticks to the eye flow rule. I have decided to lay it out like this because my magazine is quite informal so it caters to teenagers. I decided to have more than one picture because this will attract my target audience. I have less text on my contents page, more teens will want to read this magazine. I am using the topics "school life" because the magazine is a school magazine so it is a relevant topic that my target audience will want to read about. I am featuring a music review so when my target audience come to read the magazine, they can break away from school life and read about the latest music. I am using the topic of "extra curricular" to inform students about the extra curricular clubs that are on offer at their school.

Editing Music Magazine Photos

Analysis of 3 Music Magazines

Music Magazine Photoshoot Plan

Table of contents photo shoot plan

1. I plan to take a photo of Right Hook Ruin at a gig. I plan to get some of the fans as well as the band in the shot. I plan to have the fans looking like they're having fun. As Right Hook Ruin is a teenage band with a fanbase of mainly teenagers, I feel that if I capture the image with teenagers in the photo, it will meet the needs of my target audience. I will make the shot wide/mid shot so I can get a few teenagers as well as the band in the shot.

Models: Amad Redha, TJ Gayle, Milly Price, Vix Allaway

I took the photo at the Barfly in Camden. As it was a gig, I had no control over the lighting. The lights were dim.

As the Barfly venue is mainly black, the background will be black with the barfly logo. The band will be playing on the stage and the fans will be in front. I have chosen a concert venue because i feel that this relates to my target audience.

I will use this image as my main TOC image. This image will be bigger than my other images to show importance.

I have edited the image by upping the contrast ever so slightly to make the colours more bolder.

I asked the fans and band to wear alternative/grungy clothing. The colours of clothing in the image are mainly dark and purple.

Props include: An amplifier a microphone and guitar.

2. I plan to go to a number of gigs and take photos of bands that are musically similar to Right Hook Ruin. I have decided to use an image of the singer of the band Zico Chain. Like Right Hook Ruin, Zico chain are a grunge band from London. So I feel that using this image would meet the needs of my target audience. I plan to take the photo from a side low angle shot, to get an image of him screaming into the microphone. Which could represent anger again relating to my target audience.

Model: Chris Glithero

I took the image again at the Barfly in Camden. As the photo was taken at a gig, I had no control over the lighting. The lights were dimmed. I got a shot of the lights in the image.

Because the walls of the Barfly are black, the background had to be black.

I will use this as a supporting image on my TOC.

I have upped the contrast of the image so that the colours are bolder.

The singer is wearing dark clothing which ties into the grunge genre which relates to my target audience.

Props include: A microphone

3. I plan to lay out all of the kerrang magazines and to use it as a background. My model will then lie on top and stare directly at the camera. This is quite an artsy photo and will appeal to my target audience because of the artsiness of it and because of the use of the Kerrang magazines. It's a mid shot of my model with the photo turned upside down.

Model: Kate Hegarty

I took the image in my bedroom. I had the light off as it day day time, i had the curtains open to let the natural light in. I decided to use flash on the camera to avoid blurriness. I also increased the LCD when taking the photo.

The background of the image is a number of Kerrang magazines spread across my bedroom floor. This appeals to my target audience.

I will use this image as a supporting image on my TOC. Because the image is of a teenage girl, it will appeal to my target audience.

I have heavily increased the brightness and contrast of this image to make the colours bolder. I have also adjusted the levels to balance out the colour. I have added 3 photo filters, an orange one to create a bold natural feel to the image, a black filter to then drain the image to make it seem of higher quality and then a yellowy green filter to make the photo look natural.

I told my model to wear alternative clothing to appeal to my target audience.

Props include: Music magazines

4. I took this photo at a friends party, I decided to use this image (even though it doesn't necessarily relate to music) because I wanted to include a type of "self help" page in my magazine. This may attract other types of teenagers to buy the magazine. I will use it as a "How to stay safe at parties" type of image. I took the photo aiming to only get the lower body and it doesn't show the faces of the models and in that way it's a kind of artsy photo, again attracting artsty type people to buy the magazine. I got my inspiration for this photo from the TV programme Skins.

Models: Shivani Shah and Isabella Dyson

I took this photo quite late at night/early morning the lighting in the room was dimmed.

There isn't really a clear background, just a green sofa.

I will use this image as a supporting image on my TOC.

When I took this image, it was of poor quality so I have to heavily photoshop it by increasing the contrast and brightness. I have also added 3 photo filters, an orange one to create a bold natural feel to the image, a black filter to then drain the image to make it seem of higher quality and then a yellowy green filter to make the photo look natural.

I had mentioned to my models before the party to dress alternatively as I wanted to take some pictures. Shivani is wearing dark clothing which is associated with grunge clothing. Isabella is wearing a grey blazer, a stripy top and a stretchy acid wash denim skirt. Blazers are associated with today's "20th century grunge" look and the acid wash denim skirt could represent her "rebel" nature.

props include: A green sofa

5. This photo is a full body shot of a girl with a hoover. The camera is at a slight high angle and the model is bending over in a slightly "seductive/angsty" way.

Model: Rachel "Racheycore" Hodgkin

I took this photo when the sun was setting. I had natural light which is I thought would be better than fake lighting.

The background is of a white wall. I placed my model here so that when i came to editing the image, I would be able to make her stand out against the white background.

I will use this image as a supporting image on my TOC

When I took this image, it was of poor quality so I have to heavily photoshop it by increasing the contrast and brightness. I have also added 2 photo filters, a black filter to then drain the image to make it seem of higher quality and then a blue filter to make the model look paler.

I didn't have to ask my model to dress up as when this photo was taken she was going through a "scene" phase. Scene/Scene kid was a phase/label that some teenagers went through.
Scene kids create their own name (Racheycore)
Scene kids have a very high level of self confidence which is seen in this image.
Scene kids are said to be really nasty and "bitchy" which is seen in the image by the way she is posing.
Scene kids tend to have tiny children's bags which is seen in this image as she has a tiny yellow bag.
Scene kids usually wear either bright shirts, band shirts, or plain vests with denim shorts. This is seen in the image.
Scene kids also have a number of facial piercings and wear hair extentions. This is seen in the image
Scene kids also like to wear oversized sunglasses even when it's not summer. This is also seen in the image.
I decided to use this model because the majority of my friends at the time were going through this scene phase so i thought if i used a "scene kid" as a model it would appeal to my target audience.

Props include: A hoover

6. This photo is probably the most artsy out of all of my TOC images. It's a close up of a girl wearing fake glasses.

Model: Niamh Dunphy

I have used natural light in this image to keep it natural and artsy

I took this photo in my bathroom against a white wall (editing has made it slightly off colour)
I did this because I wanted it to be a natural artsy photo.

I will use this image as a supporting image on my TOC

I have edited the image by increasing the brightness and contrast ever so slightly. I have added a yellowy green photo filter to create a natural look.

The model is wearing fake glasses which are popular amongst teenagers. By telling the model to wear these, I am catering to the needs of my target audience.
