What is your favourite genre of music?
I have chosen this question because it gives me an idea of what music people listen to. I will base my magazine on what ever the most popular genre is. This will mean that if i publish the magazine more people in my target audience will purchase it. I have given people 10 choice and the "other" choice. I chose rock, R&B, hip hop, rap, emo, metal, dance, dub, classical and ambient. The 2 main genres of music nowadays are rock and r&B/hip hop/rap. I chose the sub genre emo because people may prefer emo to rock. Emo is a lot heavier and more emotional than mainstream rock so I put it down as they differ greatly. I put down metal because like emo the genre differs greatly from rock, although it is a sub genre. I put down dance because although it relates to r&b it's a whole new genre with roots from blues and hip hop. It is also a very liked genre in this day and age. I put down dub/dubstep because it's a genre that the kids of today are listening to. It is music that is played at raves and underground gigs. It's a growing genre of music and in my survey it is shown that some people do like the genre. I put classical because I didn't want to be biased and just have the stereotypical/mainstream genres. As shown in the slideshow above, some people did state that they liked classical music. I put down ambient because it isn't a well recognized genre of music, but i thought i should add some unknown genres into the question to see if people did like the genre. I had the option other to see if any other popular genres came up. The most popular other genres that came up were indie and jazz. I didn't put indie in my question because i thought the genre shared lots of the rock music qualities and that they were too similar. I didn't put jazz in because I personally do not like jazz. Listing the "other" option allows people to write down other genres they prefer, this will help me in future if i were to design another questionnaire. I have learnt to create an "other" genre and to broaden my musical knowledge and to include genres myself I do not like.

What is you least favourite genre of music? Again I listed the same genres as before to make the questions fair. This question is important because it will help me determine the genres that people don't like. This will help me decide what genre not to base my magazine around. The majority of people hate metal music, so I will avoid that genre when editing my magazine. My results show that rock and R&B were the most popular genres and metal was the most unpopular. If I myself did not like rock music, I could have produced another survey to determine whether to do a rock or R&B magazine as they both scored really highly in my survey. From these results, I learnt that rock and R&B are the 2 most popular genres, not just in my magazine but in general, and I know that metal is probably the most disliked genre and I know not to make my music magazine, a metal music magazine.

How much would you pay for a music magazine?
I have asked this question because it will give me an idea of how much people would pay for a music magazine. This will help me if i want to publish the music magazine and sell it. If i put the price too low, people might think the magazine is too cheap and not worth purchasing. If i put the price too high people won't want to purchase it. I found that the most popular price is £2-2.50. And from my research i know that teenagers do not have a lot of money, especially to spend on magazines. I am making my music magazine's age range 16-25 so I would probably make the magazine £2-2.50. It was also the most popular choice, and because i did my research/questionnaire on teenagers, this told me the price they wanted.

What would you like to see in the magazine?
I have asked this question to find out what people would want in the magazine. I feel that this is a very important question as this will tell me what my target audience want in the magazine, therefore people will purchase it if they see things they want in the magazine. I have analysed a few magazines and come up with: gigs, reviews, gossip, posters, competitions and new bands. In the music magazines i analysed I found that they all advertised gigs. This is an obvious trait of a music magazine as the gigs are advertising bands. Some music magazines have cd and gig reviews. This is to let fans know how much a cd or gig costs, and how good the band are live and whether or not to purchase the CD. Some magazines contain celebrity gossip. Fangirls will want to read about their favourite bands and what they have been up to. Some music magazines have posters inside. These are usually A3 or sometimes bigger. This usually increases the price. Competitions will attract people to buy the magazine depending on the price. All the music magazines I have analysed advertise new bands. This I think will attract people to buy the magazine because everyone likes to find out about new bands. I will feature new bands and reviews in my magazine as they were most popular in the survey. I feel that my target audience will want to see adverts for gigs, and interviews. Interviews/articles are popular in the magazines I analysed, but are kept short and have large images. This is because the magazines I looked at are designed for teens, articles are short because the majority of teens don't like to read and their attention spans are short, so reading a long article won't keep the reader drawn in. Images are bigger to fill space where a longer article should be.

What music magazines do you read?
I left this as an open question because I only read rock music magazines and I wanted to see if anyone wrote any other genre of music magazine. The most popular magazines were NME Q and Kerrang. I asked this question to find out what people read. I will analyse these magazines taking ideas from their front cover, contents page and a double spread in order to get the highest mark possible. This question again would help me with what genre of music people like. I am going to do more magazine research on the 3 most popular magazines from this question to help me produce a magazine that my target audience will like. These 3 magazines are probably the most popular rock music magazines amongst teens.

My music survey

This is my music survey. I have created a series of questions that will hopefully help me create my music magazine. This will help me decipher which attributes of music magazines people like.
I have asked the question "What is you favourite genre of music?" I have asked this question to a number of people to find out which genre is the most popular. I feel if I were to improve this question, I would list less genres as some of the genres I have listed are sub genres rather than actual genres. This will give me a clear idea of what the majority of teenagers listen to which will help me edit my magazine.
I have asked the question "What is your least favourite genre of music?" Because this will give me a clear idea of what not to base my music magazine on. Again i feel I have listed too many genres, so if I were to improve this questionnaire or for reference, I know now not to list too many options as this may effect my results.
I have listed 4 fonts to find out out which font people like. I have listed 4 because I feel this is the right number, not too many fonts and not too little fonts. If I had listed too little fonts people will not have much of a choice. If i'd put too many fonts down people may get frustrated and will want to pick 2 fonts. I've gone for the grungey look because based on my results i have decided to make a rock music magazine.
I have asked the question "What is your favourite band at the moment?" This will give me an idea of what to base my cover on, and it also ties in with the genre questions.
I have asked the question "How much would you pay for a music magazine?" This is a very important question as it will help me to determine a price for my magazine and if the price is too high, people won't purchase the magazine. I did some research into music magazines and looked at the prices of the magazines. I realised that the magazines are in between £1-3 unless there is a CD or freebie with it which will obviously make the price a lot higher.
I have asked the question "What would you like to see in the magazine?" I have asked this question because like the question above, it effects whether people actually buy the magazine. I have listed a number of sections that are found in music magazines. I will edit what is in my magazine based on my results from this question.
I have asked the question "What music magazines do you read?" I have asked this because I can get a feel of what people like to read. I can then analyse this magazine in detail which will then help me with my magazine editting process. I have decided to create a rock genre music magazine marketed at teenagers simply because the majority of people who filled out the survey like music and I myself am a teenager who likes to listen to rock music so my knowledge of rock music will come in handy when creating the magazine.
